Abstract

A Methodist woman named Phoebe Palmer (1807-74) began a revival that gave rise to some leading Evangelical denominations of today and set the stage for the emergence of modern Pentecostalism. She was an early proponent of Christian feminism and American social reform. She wrote 18 books and edited a leading Christian magazine, yet her work has been largely neglected by American church historians.
